Millions of years in the making, the Saguenay Fjord is a breathtaking reminder of earth's spectacular evolution. Carved by ancient glaciers, the fjord is Quebec's largest and the most southerly fjord in the northern hemisphere. Over 880 feet deep in some places and 65 miles long, the fjord is home to 54 species of fish and marine mammals.
See the fjord in all its glory aboard a cruise boat that will pick you up at the pier or you have the option of driving through the stunning countryside and taking the boat from.L'Anse-Saint-Jean one of the most beautiful villages in Quebec. To thoroughly enjoy your adventure, please wear warm clothing and bring along a camera to capture each memorable moment.
From the pier you'll board your boat for a 2-hour cruise across the sapphire-blue waters of the fjord past pass Sainte Rose du Nord, a charming little hamlet of only 480 residents named one of "most Beautiful Villages of Quebec." Nestled on the shores of the Saguenay River the village is surrounded by forested mountains and pristine lakes.
You'll continue to cruise to L'Anse-Saint-Jean, while you marvel at the granite walls, carved out by massive glaciers. Breathe in the quiet and have your camera handy. Peregrine falcons can be found soaring overhead or nesting on the cliffs while seals catch a little sun on nearby rocks. As you cruise along, you may imagine native tribes like the Montagnais or even Jacques Cartier, the first European to visit the area in 1535, paddling to shore with a day's catch of fish.
Straight ahead is Cape Trinity, the fjord's highest cliffs and home of the impressive Notre-Dame-du-Saguenay statue. Standing more than 980 feet above the water, Our Lady of the Saguenay measures 32 feet high and weighs three tons. Sculpted in 1881 out of solid white pine, the statue is covered in lead to protect it from the weather and is a regional landmark and considered the fjord's protector.
When you arrive at L'Anse-Saint-Jean , you'll have the chance to do a little exploring on your own. You will then continue to discover the Fjord this time by land with a picture opportunity at an old covered bridge that figured in the $1000,00 Can Bill.
At the end of your adventure you'll return to the pier enlightened and charmed by this unforgettable experience.
