Board your air-conditioned motorcoach and travel along the Adriatic Coast to the famed resort at Rimini. Head inland; ascending the Apennines to the Republic of San Marino and disembark to explore on foot. Founded in 301, San Marino is Europe's third-smallest state and the world's oldest republic. It is divided into nine districts or castelli.

Your guided walking tour explores the Castello della Città di San Marino. Walk through the Porta San Francesco to the medieval city centre and visit the Piazza Della Liberta. View the Palazzo delle Poste, the Arcipretura Vecchia, the Palazzo Pubblico and the 1896 Statue of Liberty. The neoclassical Basilica di San Marino looms above the piazza and at the Palazzo del Governo you'll have the chance to photograph the Changing of the Guard.

When it is lunchtime, treat yourself to your choice of restaurants with options ranging four course meals to light bites. Then opt for a strenuous but fascinating walk to the Salita alla Rocca, the republic's oldest fortress. Its polygonal Torre Guaita was literally carved out of the mountain during the 12th century. Alternatively, enjoy free time for independent sightseeing and shopping.

Back in Ravenna, disembark in the city center and walk through a portion of the historic section of the city to Basilica di San Vitale and the Tomb of Galla Placidia to view the fine Byzantine mosaics. It's all part of an unforgettable and moderately active full-day excursion.
