Board an air-conditioned motorcoach at the pier for the short drive to the historic city center of Ravenna, a convenient way to begin this nice half-day excursion. Travelling from your cruise ship, you will stop at the Mausoleum of Theodoric for an exterior view and photos of this tomb. Theodoric, the famous Roman-Barbarian Emperor endowed the city of Ravenna with power and prestige prior to the arrival of the Byzantines.
Next up is a visit to the famed Basilica di San Vitale. Completed in 547, this octagonal-shaped church is renowned for the fine Byzantine mosaics that brilliantly decorate its impressive choir and apse. The adjacent Tomb of Galla Placidia, commissioned by a powerful Roman empress, contains magnificent mosaics that stun the eye and challenge the mind. It is hard to imagine that works of art this vibrant could be so old: they date back to the 4th century!
Upon completion of your walking tour, repair to Enoteca for included refreshments. Sit down to a glass of regional wine and a snack of local specialties consisting of cheese and ham with bread before some free time to linger in Ravenna to shop and explore on your own. At this time you may decide whether to join your tour bus back to the pier or just hop the shuttle when you are ready to bid Ravenna a fond farewell.
