Depart your ship and enjoy the scenic transfer to the historic center of fascinating Ravenna. Here you'll disembark for a fascinating walking tour that makes this strenuous half-day excursion a dream for active explorers. You'll visit the octagonal Basilica di San Vitale which was completed in 547 and is renowned for the fine Byzantine mosaics that decorate its choir and apse.

At the adjacent Tomb of Galla Placidia, a jewel in the crown of Ravenna, you'll be surprised to learn that the vivid mosaics that adorn the tomb date back to antiquity and are in fact the oldest in Ravenna. And at Dante's Tomb, you'll learn the history of Italy's greatest poet.

Exiled from Florence, Dante took up residence in Ravenna. After his death in 1321, a portion of his ashes was entombed here and, it is said, the Florentines misplaced the rest. Every year a delegation from Florence comes to pay homage at his tomb.

Continue to Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, built by the Ostrogoth King Theodoric in the early 6th century. Here you'll find more examples of Ravenna's vast collection of priceless mosaics. The richly decorated walls include both Arian and Byzantine mosaics with subjects drawn from the past like the Procession of Virgins and the Procession of Martyrs.

Say goodbye to your guide and set off on your own for independent sightseeing or shopping in Ravenna. Visit the town's other monuments or enjoy lunch or a cappuccino at a relaxing café. You will return to the pier using the ship's shuttle service.
