Discover Costa Rica's most iconic river wildlife on a safari-style adventure along the Tarcoles River. Created in 1993 by a Costa Rican veterinarian, Jungle Crocodile Safari has become a trusted name for showcasing the country's crocodiles, tropical birdlife, and mangrove habitats through a relaxed, up-close experience.

From the Puntarenas pier, board a luxurious, air-conditioned motor coach for a comfortable drive through the region's scenic countryside. Upon arrival at the Jungle Crocodile Safari facilities, you'll receive a complimentary bird guide to help identify species during your river journey.

Board a covered, open-air boat for a guided cruise along the lower Tárcoles River and into parts of the Guacalillo Estuary. This area is home to one of the largest populations of American crocodiles in Costa Rica-often seen basking near the banks or gliding silently through the water. Your naturalist guide will provide information about the river's wildlife as you look out for crocodiles and other creatures that call the river home.

The area also supports a rich variety of birdlife. Among the species you might spot are the great egret, yellow-crowned night heron, little blue heron, roseate spoonbill, wood stork, mangrove swallow, and great black hawk. The Tárcoles River's abundant fish and aquatic life make it a reliable feeding ground for many of these species. And with some luck, you may also catch sight of the brilliantly colored Scarlet Macaw flying overhead.

While the tour touches on mangrove conservation and local ecology, the real highlight is the opportunity to see crocodiles and other river wildlife up close in their natural environment. With its broad, open layout, the river offers excellent visibility, and a classic safari-style feel-perfect for observing crocodiles, birds, and other wildlife in their natural setting.

After your river experience, continue to El Jardín, a charming local visitor center known for its butterfly gardens and artisan market. Here you'll have time to walk through the butterfly enclosure and explore the colorful displays of native species. A tropical fruit buffet will be served, accompanied by natural refreshments, water, and freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee. You'll also have time to shop for souvenirs and handicrafts produced by local artisans before heading back to the ship.
