WHAT YOU VISIT
Isla San Lucas National Park
A dark chapter in Costa Rica's history was written in 1873 when the country's most notorious and brutal penal colony opened. Closed in 1991, it serves as a reminder of the island's eerie history. Upon arrival at the former prison grounds, you'll walk down the Street of Bitterness, a stone path built by inmates, with visits into the command post and dispensary, chapel, former kitchen, and several cell blocks-including maximum-security cells-where original graffiti can still be seen.
Tumbabotes Beach
Be sure to wear swimwear under your clothes if you wish to dive into the clear, calm waters. Quiet and secluded, the beach is also ideal to relax on the white sand or stroll along a nearby trail.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
At Tumbabotes Beach you may spot wildlife such as monkeys, iguanas, pelicans, or coastal birds like pelicans, spoonbills, sandpipers and herons.
REFRESHMENTS
Following your tour of the prison, you'll take a short coastal cruise where fresh tropical fruit and bottled water will be served en route to Tumbabotes Beach.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Enjoy coastal and island views as the boat crosses the Gulf of Nicoya. The approximate 30 to 45-minute ride offers sweeping panoramic views of the mountainous mainland coast and the lush, untouched tropical forests of the surrounding gulf.

Special Notes
There are no changing facilities available on the island or on the boat. As you will be visiting a National Park, single-use plastic bottles are not permitted. Please bring a reusable water bottle. It is recommended to wear light clothing and bring swimwear under your clothes if planning to enter the water. Bring a towel, sunscreen, a hat, and a camera. Wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for uneven terrain. For the beach, water-friendly footwear may be useful if you prefer not to walk barefoot. Maximum age to participate is 78, maximum height is 72" and maximum weight is 275 pounds.
