Seattle has Mt. Rainier. Mt. Fuji is synonymous with Japan. And the Osorno volcano is the world-renowned icon of Puerto Montt. Rising an impressive 8,700 feet it can be seen anywhere within the Puerto Montt and Lake District areas. It's one of the most active volcanoes in the southern Chilean Andes with a number of frequent explosions occurring during the past 14,000 years, the last one in 1869. This all day guided tour will take you up, down and all around the stunning sights that surround this celebrated landmark.
After boarding your transportation you'll travel north to Petrohue Falls, which stands in the shadows of this stunning volcanic monument. Along the way you'll travel through lush, green pastures and a countryside dotted with lakes and charming farms with Osorno volcano outside your window. Tucked in the magnificent Vicente Perez Rosales National Park, Chile's oldest national park, Petrohue Falls was created eons ago after an Osorno eruption spewed out a multitude of volcanic boulders. Once you arrive you can walk across the bridges, explore (be careful, the rocks may be slippery), breathe in the fresh, clean air and marvel at the brilliant green water as it thunderously roars over the volcanic rocks. Have your cameras ready, you may get a glimpse of a deer, gray fox, long-muzzled weasel or little mountain monkey darting in and out of the brush.
For a totally different view of Osorno, your next destination is La Burbuja, a ski resort on the edge of Lake Llanquihue. You'll travel through an alpine wonderland as you make your way up the slope of Osorno, often called the "Fujiyama of South America." During winter, La Burbuja is home to skiers and snowboarders; during summer you'll find many visitors hiking, mountain biking and just relaxing. Once you step off your transportation you'll be astounded by the gorgeous views. The ski lift is operational during summer and is a great way to take in the entire breathtaking area.
Your next destination is lunch at a local restaurant where you'll sit down for an enjoyable meal of Chilean and German favorites. On the menu are cheese empanadas, vegetable soup, grilled fish and kuchen, a German word for cake that's made from a sweet dough and topped with fruit and custard or latticed crust. Your choice of water, wine, coffee or tea will accompany your meal along with a Pisco sour, which is a traditional South American cocktail.
After lunch you'll reboard your transportation for your return trip to Puerto Montt. But first, you'll stop in the charming town of Puerto Varas. Resting on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, Puerto Varas was founded by German immigrants over 150 years ago and is well known for its German traditions, food and architecture. As you stroll the quaint village streets you may get the feeling you're in Bavaria.
Then, you'll depart for Puerto Montt with the ever-present Osorno guiding you back to the pier.
