The endangered alerce trees are indigenous to southern Chile. Since the 16th century they've been prized for their beauty and durability; the reddish brown wood was used to make barrels, furniture, homes, musical instruments, pencils and more. But after centuries of deforestation, the Chilean government outlawed the cutting of live trees in 1976. See these giants for yourself on a half-day excursion. Your trek through the Lahuen Ñadi Forest is strenuous so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes or boots.
Your tour begins at the pier as you board your transportation. Your onboard guide will point out areas of interest as you make your way west of Puerto Montt to Lahuen Ñadi Forest. Once you reach your destination, you'll join a guide for a one-hour walk through this stunning woodland. Did you know that these rare and protected trees can reach heights of 120 feet but take thousands of years to mature? And, these evergreen species can live longer than 3,600 years? As you walk through the woods you'll see the alerce towering over the southern beech, laurel and myrtle trees that also grow here.
At the end of your trek you'll rejoin your transportation and head north to the quaint town of Nueva Braunau. As you gaze out your window you'll pass through a rural landscape filled with lush farmland, undulating hillsides and the Osorno volcano off in the distance. When you arrive in this picturesque German-style village you'll tour the Colonization Museum, which displays items from the town's founding in 1877 by Austrian settlers.
Next on your itinerary is a stop in another Bavarian-inspired town, Puerto Varas. Resting on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, Puerto Varas is known as the "City of Roses" for its beautiful rose-lined streets. Founded by German immigrants over 150 years ago, it's well known for its German traditions, food and architecture. As you stroll the lovely village streets you may get the feeling that you're in the Black Forest. During your visit you'll have a chance to visit a handicraft market where you can shop for local artwork, craftwork and souvenirs.
After your tour, you'll board your transportation for the return trip to Puerto Montt with a much better appreciation for nature.
