In July of 1865, more than 150 Welsh settlers sailed aboard the Mimosa from Liverpool to southern Patagonia to establish an overseas Welsh settlement. They chose this remote location envisioning a New Wales in South America, dedicated to preserving Welsh culture in a foreign land. Today, a chain of quaint, traditional towns throughout the Chubut River Valley showcases the enduring legacy of this unique heritage.
Your full-day tour begins with a scenic drive through the vast Patagonian landscape and into the fertile the Chubut River Valley. Your first destination is the Poet's House Museum, where you'll discover the customs, traditions and everyday life of the early Welsh settlers. The museum recreates the family environment and lifestyle of the first immigrants, offering an interesting glimpse into the history of the Welsh community in Patagonia..
Reboard the motorcoach and continue through pastoral landscapes to Gaiman, a charming village located along the Chubut River. A walk through Gaiman takes you back in time, as the town is considered the heart of the Welsh region in Patagonia. Much of its traditional architecture remains, and Welsh heritage continues to be an important part of the community's identity.
No visit to Gaiman would be complete without experiencing a traditional Welsh tea. The town is renowned for this tradition, and even the late Princess Diana enjoyed a Welsh tea during her visit to Patagonia in 1995. Enter Ty Gwyn, one of the area's traditional Welsh tea houses, still run by descendants of the original settlers. Enjoy a classic tea service accompanied by a tempting selection of homemade pastries and cakes, including traditional Welsh cake with its distinctive blend of dried fruits and flavors.
Continue your journey to Narlu Farm, where the air is scented with fresh lavender as you disembark the motorcoach. This charming working farm is dedicated to the harvesting of exceptional fruit. Here, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, peaches and other stone fruits are grown and used in a variety of locally made products. Tour this idyllic fruit farm and its small processing plant. Your guide will explain the process from planting to harvest to table, and you'll have time to snap some lovely photos and peruse the products and locally made handicrafts.
See the sights of Gaiman and enjoy a Welsh choir performance before the return drive to the pier.
