What you will visit:
Butze Rainforest Nature Hike
This rugged trail offers a relatively easy hike that loops through the lush rainforest ecosystem. This trail was built in 1992 and upgraded in 2003. Along the way, stop at an overlook for great views of the Butze Rapids. Wildlife is abundant, and wolves, deer, bears and bald eagles have been occasionally spotted deep within the forest. A naturalist guide will impart fascinating information about the local flora, pointing out the many trees, berries and plants used in native medicine for their therapeutic properties. As you walk, note the many bark-stripped cedar trees, which evidence past First Nations activity. Dress warmly and wear sturdy walking shoes.
What you will see along the way:
It's a short, scenic, 15-minute ride from port to the Butze Rainforest Nature Hike. Once on the trail, you'll take in the coastal wetlands, old-growth forests and a robust plant ecosystem influenced by the North Coast's marine climate. It is important to stay on the pathways, as lichen, mosses and peat bogs are sensitive to human impact. Wildlife abounds as do picturesque views.
Exercise caution when walking, as the boardwalks along the way can be slippery when wet.
Photo Opportunity:
The Butze Rapids is a natural phenomenon caused by the ebb and flow of the tides. The unusual reversal of the tidal rapids is most dramatic between high and low water. Depending on the time of day, bring your camera to snap pictures of Mother Nature at her best.
Snack:
Enjoy a snack and bottled water at the rapids before returning to the trailhead and to downtown Prince Rupert.
