Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary
Located on the slopes of Mount Espinho overlooking Braga, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its magnificent sculptured stairs representing the five human senses that lead to the top. A pilgrimage site since a chapel devoted to the Holy Cross was erected in the 14th century, the present Sanctuary was built in the 18th century and pilgrims continue to climb the impressive Baroque stairway, which zigzags 381 feet up the hillside.
Braga Cathedral
Consecrated in 1089, and built between the 11th and 12th centuries, the cathedral served as the centerpiece to Braga's importance as a powerful archbishopric, with authority over much of the surrounding area. The Romanesque Cathedral boasts a larger-than-life statue of the Virgin and Child between twin crown towers.
