Amakhala Game Reserve
Stretched out over 18,000 acres, the land of the malaria-free reserve was once used to ranch sheep and cattle up to the turn of the century. Today, Amakhala's unique conservation initiative allows animals to be re-introduced where they once roamed freely and to re-establish the original flora and fauna species to the area. Once you arrive, you'll set out for a three-hour game drive in a 4x4 driven by a friendly and informative ranger.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
The unspoiled beauty of the reserve rivals the animals you're likely to encounter. In addition to the Big 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and secretive leopard), the reserve is home to cheetas, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, monkeys, and plenty of antelope species. You might be lucky and see some of the more elusive and shy animals like the hyena or bat eared fox.
LUNCH
After the game drive, relax with a delicious meal at the restaurant inside the Amakhala Game Reserve lodge.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Sit back and relax as you travel through the city of Port Elizabeth and head north to the reserve, which hosts five of South Africa's seven biomes, bushveld to savannah.
