Imagine enjoying lunch while a rainbow colored parrot looks over your shoulder. A family experience not to be missed, this fun and exceptional half-day excursion allows you to enjoy a casual lunch while observing lorikeets, cockatoos, curlews, parrots, herons, and other birdlife as they fly and roam freely.
From the pier it's just a short drive to Wildlife Habitat, Australia's leading environmental wildlife rescue program. Covering eight acres, the Habitat is committed to conservation and helps look after injured, orphaned, or sick animals. It's also the perfect setting for lunch.
Upon arriving, you'll be led to a covered enclosure where you can help yourself to a casual lunch.
So, exactly, what is a lorikeet? A small to medium-sized parrot famed for its tropical-hued plumage. Along with a deep purple cap, its dazzling color combination includes brilliant blues and greens, exquisite reds, bright yellows, and deep purples, all of which appear to radiate an iridescent glow when standing in direct sunlight. Of the 55 species that exist worldwide, only seven live in Australia. But the rainbow lorikeet is among the most spectacular with red bills, blue heads, green wings, and black feet.
Did you know that lorikeets spend approximately 70% of their time feeding? Don't worry-they won't be after your lunch. The lorikeet's diet is comprised of nectar, pollen flowers, fruits, berries, and unripe grain.
After a scrumptious lunch, you're free to enjoy the Grassland Habitat, which includes the kangaroo and wallaby feeding areas (you can pat and hand feed them, too); the Wetland Habitat where you'll find Australia's most iconic animal, the koala; and the Rainforest Habitat, home of the Boyd's Rainforest Dragon and the large, flightless cassowary bird, native to the rainforests of Tropical North Queensland, and classified as endangered. The Wildlife Habitat also boasts freshwater crocodiles and the larger estuarine crocodiles. If you're looking for a thrilling and up-close encounter, you have the opportunity to purchase a souvenir photo holding a small crocodile or perhaps a snake.
After spending some time browsing the gift shop for a variety of souvenirs, you'll re-board your motorcoach for the return drive to your waiting ship and on to your next thrilling adventure, while you reminisce about the various local animals you experienced.
