Fremantle, Australia (panoramic drive)
The limestone hills that rise at the mouth of the Swan River define the city of Fremantle, established in 1829, and many of its heritage buildings are built from this local, pale-colored stone. A major port for Western Australia, Fremantle lies where the Swan River meets the Indian Ocean. In addition to great beaches, the pedestrian-friendly city offers a glimpse of its colonial and Gold Rush past, which coexists with its vibrant, seaside atmosphere.
Fremantle Prison
Built in 1855 to house imperial and colonial prisoners, enemy aliens, prisoners of war and maximum-security detainees, Fremantle Prison was decommissioned in 1991 after continuously being used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. The empty prison with its rows of empty cells is a UNESCO Site, Western Australia's only World Heritage listed building, and tours allow a spooky glimpse of death row, the solitary cells and the hanging gallows.
Western Australian Maritime Museum
Home to unique galleries that showcase Western Australia's lengthy maritime history, the WA Maritime Museum is a celebration of the coastal city of Fremantle and its past, present and future as a thriving port. Peruse the exhibits of handcrafted sailing boats, leisure vessels, commercial pearl luggers and an Oberon class submarine. A high point is the opportunity to view the winning America's Cup yacht, Australia II. Enjoy a talk from a guide who will give you a fascinating insight into this historic race.
What you will see along the way:
