Departing from Otaru, you'll board your comfortable motor coach for a scenic journey passing dense forests and rolling countryside.
Your travels will take you to the heart of the city that came to international fame as the host city for the 1972 Winter Olympics, the first ever held in Asia. You'll stop at Odori Park, truly the city's "central park" that divides it into North and South. Originally designated as the main street, it eventually became a park spanning 13 blocks. Peruse its underground shopping town, elaborate gardens, promenades and pushcart vendors. The Sapporo TV Tower anchors one end of the park and the ski jump from the 1972 Winter Olympic is visible from the grounds. Throughout the year, many events and ceremonies are held here, such as the Sapporo Lilac Festival and the Sapporo Snow Festival that attracts millions of visitors each year. Climb the TV tower for some spectacular city views from its observation deck. (Weather Permitting)
Many people are familiar with the beer that shares the city's name. Beer was first brewed in Japan in 1876 under the direction of Hokkaido Development Agency. They had hired foreign experts who happened to find natural hops in Sapporo. You can choose to organize a taxi to take you on the short ride from city center is the Sapporo Beer Museum. The red brick building recalls the pioneer days of Hokkaido over 130 years ago. During your visit can learn the history and technology of Sapporo's first brewery, then purchase a sample of the draft beer fresh from the brewery.
You may want to stop by the Botanic Garden. Established in 1886, it's part of Hokkaido University, and preserves part of the forest that covered the Ishikari Plain. Visit the alpine garden, greenhouse, and small museum that hosts artifacts of the Ainu people, (the aboriginal people of the area.)
Your day of adventure comes to an end as you re-board your motorcoach with your treasures, and memories for the scenic ride back through the city to Otaru and your ship.
