WHAT YOU WILL VISIT:
Sunpu Castle Park
Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu built this castle in 1585 and lived there on two occasions. Today, its remains hint at its former grandeur. The Edo Period castle was surrounded by moats and stone walls whose size and fortitude can still be seen in the ruins. The castle's gate and turret have been restored, and inside the turret there is a reference library with restoration documents and excavated models. Look for a bronze statue of Ieyasu with a falcon resting on his arm. It is found near a mandarin orange tree believed to have been planted by Ieyasu.

Shizuoka Sengen Shrine
From the park, continue on to Shizuoka Sengen Shrine, a complex of seven shrines. The three main ones were remodeled over a period of 60 years beginning in 1804. Sengen Shrine is also noted for its dramatic architectural style and extensive use of gold leaf, lacquer and wood carvings. Step into the large, two-story worship hall.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE ALONG THE WAY:
Shizuoka Prefecture is a modern city with great ties to its historic past. Surrounded by beautiful scenery and striking views of Mt. Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan towering at 12,388 feet, Sunpu Castle Park is an approximately 60-90 minute drive from port.

SHOPPING:
Yaizu Fish Market
A cornucopia of fresh seafood is on display from local vendors. But there is more than the catch of the day here. You can also find souvenirs and curios in the many colorful shops.
