WHAT YOU WILL VISIT:
Kasuisai Temple
A world of Zen awaits at this historic temple and Japanese garden, a lovely showcase for 600 years of history. Named for the shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, Kasuisai Temple was built in 1401 under the Soto School of Buddhism and was used by monks who adhere to Zen meditation practices. The temple's architectural design has earned it a distinction as a National Cultural Property.

Kakegawa Castle
From its hilltop perch, Kakegawa Castle, built by Asahina Yasuhiro in 1513 upon orders from Imagawa Yoshitada, offers lovely city views. Ownership of the castle passed through many hands before an 1854 earthquake partially destroyed it. It was demolished in 1869. In 1994, Kakegawa Castle became the first to be rebuilt using traditional methods in Japan. Inside, view photographs, displays of weapons and armor, and the original "goten" (palace), restored by the feudal lord Ota Sukekatsu after the earthquake. It showcases a tiled roof and tatami flooring.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE ALONG THE WAY:
The Port of Omaezaki, at the entrance of Suruga Bay, nicely balances its bustling trade center with stellar views over the Pacific Ocean and tranquil natural surroundings. It is an approximately 60-minute drive to Kasuisai Temple.

SHOPPING:
Your adventure includes a stop at the Roadside Station Kakegawa, where you'll find all sorts of souvenirs and mementos, local produce and snacks.
