One of the pleasures of vacation is immersing in the local history, art and culture. First on the itinerary is a tour of Tea Museum Shizuoka where Japan's time-honored tea culture is showcased in a number of interactive exhibits. Learn tea's 1,200-year history and its impact on Japanese arts, crafts, architecture, and landscaping, and view the quaint tea ceremony house during a stroll through the lovely garden. Just a short drive away is the Horai Bridge, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's longest wooden pedestrian bridge. Completed during the Meiji era in 1879, the 897-meter-long (2,944-foot-long) bridge crosses the Oi River. You're invited to walk across before rejoining the coach and continuing on to the Ogane Family Residence, an excellent example of an Edo-era home. The 300-year-old front gate and main building are nationally designated as Important Cultural Properties.
