WHAT YOU VISIT
Yahiko Shrine
Perched at the foot of the 2,080-foot-tall Mt. Yahiko, the shrine is dedicated to the deity known as Amanokagoyama-no-mikoto who, according to legend, introduced fishing, rice cultivation, salt production and farming to the area. Originally built 2,400 years ago, the current buildings were rebuilt in 1916 and registered as National Tangible Cultural Properties. The Torii gate soars 27-meters-high and the shrine's treasury holds cultural artifacts such as swords and calligraphy.
Panorama Tower
Located at the summit of Mt. Yahiko, the rotating and elevating observatory deck offers magnificent panoramic views of the Echigo Plains and Sado Island.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
The Torii gate is not the only photogenic subject at the Yahiko Shrine. The picturesque Tama-no-Hashi Bridge, known as 'the sacred bridge of the gods,' the two guardian lion-dogs and 400-year-old cedar trees provide great reminders of your trip.
LUNCH
Treat yourself to lunch at one of the many seafood restaurants that line Teradomari Fish Market Street. Fresh fish of good quality, caught in the local Teradomari Bay and Izumozaki Bay, can be purchased at reasonable prices. Local favorites you might like to try include the famous 'hamayaki' (fresh seafood grilled on the beach) and 'kaisen don' (fresh raw fish on rice).
