WHAT YOU VISIT
Napier
Dubbed the "Art Deco City," Napier was redesigned in the Art Deco style after a devastating earthquake destroyed the city in 1931. Within a remarkable two-year period, 111 new buildings were constructed in the downtown area in the contemporary style of the times: Art Deco. The style, which originated in Europe in the early 20th century, highlights the optimism and idealism of the Roaring '20s. It is noted for its pastel-colored structures marked by geometric lines and patterns and streamlined and sophisticated aerodynamic shapes created with glass and metal construction.
National Aquarium
Founded in 1956, the Aquarium is home to a range of saltwater, freshwater and land animal exhibits. Watch penguins feed and play. See stingrays, kingfish, hapuku, snapper, and other majestic native species swimming over you in the Oceanarium tunnel complete with moving sidewalk. The facility also boasts kiwi, tuatara and penguin enclosures to highlight New Zealand's indigenous wildlife.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
When you think of the "Art Deco City," you may think that it was strictly used for commercial buildings in downtown Napier but the tiny suburb of Marewa (a Mâori word meaning "gift from the sea") also used the same simple and modern design when they began rebuilding their homes after the quake.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Sit back and relax as the leisurely coach tour travels through Napier and one of the city's most popular destinations – the picturesque Marine Parade sea walk, past the sunken gardens and the Spirit of Napier sculpture (which represents Napier rising from the ashes of the devastating earthquake), and into the suburbs for views of the city and Hawke's Bay.
