WHAT YOU VISIT
Napier City Drive
Once settled into your comfortable coach seat you'll set off on an easy one-hour tour that hits the highlights. Learn how this once sleepy town on Hawke's Bay changed drastically in 1931 when an earthquake completely destroyed Napier but raised the inner harbor and other areas, leaving over 2,830 extra hectares (7,000 acres). The city valiantly rebounded and rebuilt itself in the most modern and innovative architecture of its time – Art Deco. However, the city's take on Art Deco is quite unique – the structures also pay homage to the Mâori by combining the linear symmetry of Art Deco with tribal Mâori motifs.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Meandering along the shore is one of the city's most popular destinations – the picturesque Marine Parade sea walk. Fun-filled attractions include the National Aquarium, the Napier Sound Shell and the symbol of Napier – the statue of Pania, a figure from Mâori mythology.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Your route takes you to the Napier seashore along the Marine Parade, past sunken gardens and the Spirit of Napier sculpture, and continues through Napier's suburbs for views of the city, Hawke's Bay and the Marewa District, noted for its Art Deco homes.
