WHAT YOU VISIT
Napier (Art Deco Walking Tour)
The 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake became infamous as the deadliest natural disaster in New Zealand, claiming at least 250 lives and measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale. All but a few of Napier's buildings were completely destroyed by the earthquake and the fires that followed. Within a remarkable two-year period, 111 new buildings were constructed in the downtown area in the contemporary style of the times: Art Deco. Your informative and entertaining Art Deco Trust guide will bring Napier's fascinating architectural history to life during a walking tour as you stroll past architectural gems such as the Municipal Theatre, the former Hotel Central and the Masonic Hotel, among many others.

Marewa
Marewa, which means, "raised from the sea," was once a large area of marshy land near Napier and a new town was formed when the quake raised the land, which opened up for residential development. A coach tour through Marewa features street after street of stunning and beautifully-designed Art Deco buildings.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Iconic crisp, clean lines; pastel shades; dramatic design elements such as sunbursts, fountains and chevrons; and innovative geometric shapes all add up to one of the world's most eclectic architectural styles. However, the city's take on Art Deco is quite unique – the structures also pay homage to the Mâori by combining the linear symmetry of Art Deco with tribal Mâori motifs.

SHOPPING
At the completion of your walking tour, continue your education at The Art Deco Shop, where in addition to a wide array of photo books you'll find clothing, figurines, lamps, DVDs and posters.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
The day begins with a coach tour to the Napier seashore along the Marine Parade, past sunken gardens and the Spirit of Napier sculpture, and continues through Napier's suburbs for views of the city, Hawke's Bay and the Marewa District, noted for its Art Deco homes.
