What you will visit:

Nanortalik
Greenland's 10th-largest and most southerly town, Nanortalik is nestled in a picturesque area set against the backdrop of dramatic mountains and the towering walls of Tasermiut Fjord. Nanortalik means "the place with polar bears," a nod to the creatures that may be spotted hitching a ride on the offshore floes. With fewer than 1,500 inhabitants, the town may be small, but it boasts several historic attractions; the Qinngua Valley, the only forest in all of Greenland; and friendly, genuine locals who delight in sharing their lives and thriving culture with visitors.

One of the best ways to enjoy and get to know daily life is on a guided stroll. The Town of Nanortalik reveals all its charms as you walk through its quaint streets lined with brightly painted houses. After passing such sites as the police station, school, youth house, and fire department, the walk concludes at the museum. Your guide will provide you with wonderful details and fun facts about Nanortalik. Stops for photographs are made and questions are welcomed along the way.

At the end of your town walk and talk you will have the option to visit the Nanortaik Museum for a historical perspective on the town. Entrance is included but this will not be a guided visit. Return to the ship at your leisure after the museum.

Photo Opportunities:
The grounds of Nanortalik are strewn with boulders. You'll want to snap a photo of one particular rock, located next to the local Lutheran church. It has been tied to the polar explorer Knud Rasmussen.

Special Notes

Entrance to the Nanortaik Museum is included however this stop is not guided. Guest who stay and enjoy the museum will walk back to the ship at their leisure. Guests should bring mosquito nets, mosquito repellent, and good walking shoes and should dress according to the weather conditions. Toilet facilities will not be available.

All of the sights you'll see on tour are accessible on foot from the tender pier, but your guide offers perspectives that you may not be aware of if you explore on your own.

The level of guide experience varies due to the remoteness of the location. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up.
