WHAT YOU VISIT
Iga Ueno Castle
This National Historic Landmark was built over 400 years ago but the castle you see today is a reconstruction that, unlike many other rebuilt castles in Japan, was made using the original materials. Once in use as the seat of the local lords during the Edo period (1603 to 1867), today the castle is home to samurai swords, armor, dolls, lacquerware and ceramics relating to the history of the castle.
Ninja Museum of Igaryu
A ninja residence has been reconstructed with trapdoors, concealed weapons, secret passageways and revolving walls.
Seki Juku
Developed by the Seki Clan in the 8th century, this well-preserved Edo-era town boasts medieval houses, warehouses and stores, earning an Important Cultural Buildings Preservation District honor. Well-known as a post town where travelers could rest while traveling along the Tokaido Road, Seki Juku was the 47th station of the 53 established in the Edo-era (1601 to early 1900s).
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
The majority of Japan's castles have been reconstructed in the 20th century using concrete; however, Ueno Castle was rebuilt with wood only, giving it a beautiful, original look and atmosphere. The stone walls on the western side of the castle are the tallest in Japan at an impressive 30 meters (98 feet).
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
A provincial castle town, Igaryu was home to the Iga ninja, the most inventive and feared spies of Japan's feudal era.
