WHAT YOU VISIT
Aoshima Island
This National Natural Monument is a peaceful spot once considered so sacred that no one could enter without permission. The object of such devotion was the lovely 1,000-year-old Aoshima Shrine. Luckily, today, you can visit this ancient Shinto shrine and stroll its tranquil paths. Set amid jungle scenery, the brightly painted shrine is believed to bring good fortune to couples in love. If you follow a small path to the right of the main building, you will discover a smaller shrine where you can purchase clay discs to throw at a target to ensure additional luck.
Shouchu Brewery
Shochu is very popular in Japan; similar to sake, the distilled alcoholic beverage is enjoyed with meals, served as an aperitif, or an after dinner drink. The ingredients used in shochu depend on the region where it is produced and can be made from sweet potatoes, rice, grains or even fruit. Enjoy a taste for yourself and learn how it's made with a tour of the Shouchu Brewery.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
A photo stop at Phoenix Road Station offers magnificent coast views. Walk out onto the
observation deck, located 50 meters (164 feet) above sea level, for shots of beautiful Pacific Ocean and the strange rock formation known as the Devil's Washboard.
