WHAT YOU VISIT
Obi Castle Town
Set in an idyllic setting, Obi Town is dominated by a 567-year-old fortified castle, which once served as the headquarters for the Shimazu shogun from 1458 to 1871. Much of the original stonework has survived despite earthquakes, and the wide stone staircase and huge stone walls hint at its former grandeur. A Designated Historical Preservation District, the castle town boasts picturesque streets lined with traditional shops and former samurai residences and a museum that holds more than 200 exhibits including swords, armor and other artifacts that pay homage to these once mighty clans.

Aoshima Island
This National Natural Monument is a peaceful spot once considered so sacred that no one could enter without permission. The object of such devotion was the lovely 1,000-year-old Aoshima Shrine. Luckily, today, you can visit this ancient Shinto shrine and stroll its tranquil paths. Set amid jungle scenery, this brightly painted shrine is believed to bring good fortune to couples in love. If you follow a small path to the right of the main building, you will discover a smaller shrine where you can purchase clay discs to throw at a target to ensure additional luck.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Just off to the left of Obi Castle's Ote-mon Gate, you'll find an authentic samurai residence, famous for its beautiful garden decorated with lanterns. It's a picture-perfect spot, with majestic Mt. Atago as the backdrop.

LUNCH
A stop for lunch at a nearby restaurant is an opportunity to sample some of Miyazaki's delicacies.

SHOPPING
Mingle with shoppers at a roadside station called "Michi no Eki," a unique rest area surrounded by magnificent views of the costal scenery. Step inside, and you'll be delighted by the souvenir shops, local food establishments and an abundance of locally produced items.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
The picturesque isle of Aoshima is connected by a 300-meter (984-feet) pedestrian bridge to the mainland and is surrounded by pristine beaches and the unusual rock formations known as Onino Sentakuita, which means "the devil's washboard."
