What you will visit:
Chartered Sanriku Railway
Winding its way along the spectacular Sanriku coastline, the chartered railway offers a relaxed ride with wide picture windows that provide stellar views.
Amber Museum
Kuji is famous for its amber, which dates from the Late Cretaceous Period. Organized amber mining has been undertaken here since the Edo Period (1600-1867), and today Japan's amber deposits rank third in the world, after the Baltic and the Dominican Republic. The informative Kuji Amber Museum, the only museum of its kind in Japan, showcases the gemstone and its place in both natural sciences and history through displays and hands-on exhibits.
Kitayamazaki Cliffs Observation Deck
Take in one of the most dramatic landscapes of the Rikuchu Coast, 656-foot cliffs (200 meters) stretching across an impressive five miles (eight kilometers) of coastline, affectionately referred to as the 'Ocean Alps.' As many as 50,000 tourists flock to the area each year, and the observation deck is the best place for fabulous photographs.
What you will see along the way:
Miyako City, located in the center of the coastal area of Iwate Prefecture, suffered devastating damage from the 2011 tsunami. Swells of water swept across the city's coastal districts, destroying everything in its path. Parts of Miyako fall within the Sanriku Fukko National Park. The city is known for its spectacular eastern coastline, which envelops Miyako Bay and its craggy rock formations along the Pacific Ocean. Whether viewed from the window of the motorcoach or from a chartered railway, despite its tragic past, its beauty still shines.
