WHAT YOU VISIT
Cesária Évora Museum
Cape Verde is known for its national music called morna, a harmonious blend of Portuguese, African, Brazilian and Cuban rhythms. The world's most famous morna singer is Grammy award-winning Cesária Évora, who was born in Mindelo. Knicknamed the "Barefoot Diva," the museum displays photos and personal items such as clothing, as well as awards and decorations documenting her singing career.

National Center of Art, Crafts and Design
Also known as the Mindelo Cultural Center, it resides in one of the island's oldest buildings. Constructed between 1850 and 1873, it once served as the customs house during Mindelo's glory days as a flourishing coal shipping port. Today, it showcases photography, painting, and sculpture by local artisans.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Disembark at Praça Dom Luís Square for views of the Cesária Évora mural on the external wall. The island's largest memorial to the singer was created by Portuguese artist Vhils. Using hammers, chisels and knives, the artist actually carved the picture into the wall without the use of paint.

REFRESHMENTS
Following your visit to the Cesária Évora Museum, enjoy locally-made appetizers served with coffee, tea and wine, beer or local liquor.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Depending on your route, the 10-minute drive to the Cesária Évora Museum travels past Torre de Belem. Built in the 1920s on Mindelo's waterfront, this three-story tower, featuring an observatory and Portuguese Royal symbols, is a replica of Lisbon's famous Belém Tower.
