Explore Mazatlan in a fresh new way – in a comfortable, automatic and fun 2-person 4x4 mini Jeep Rhino. This open-air cruiser is perfectly suited to exploring the varied terrain and narrow roads of Mazatlan. The ride can be a little bumpy, so expect to hear laughter!
Visitors from around the world are drawn to Mazatlan for its endless sunshine, picturesque beaches and lively culture. Your half-day tour begins when you walk from the pier to the Rhino vehicle station, where you'll participate in a short safety briefing.
Once inside your open-air vehicle, travel caravan style to your first attraction – Vigia ("lookout") Hill. Here, your guide will point out the picturesque sights from this sweeping vantage point: the coastline, offshore islands, and El Faro lighthouse – one of the highest operating lighthouses in the world. You might even see your sparkling ship in the deep blue Pacific!
Descend to the "Glorieta Sánchez Taboada" and admire the remarkable Cliff Divers performance as they dive off the rocky cliffs into the waters below. Continue your drive through Old Mazatlan, a showcase of colorful, post colonial buildings that hint at the grandeur of a bygone era.
The highlight of any visit to the historic center is a stop at the 19th-century cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Renaissance domes, twin spires and Gothic arches soar above you in this beautiful and spiritual space, originally completed in 1899. Two towers rise into the sky, and a bright yellow European-style dome is a picture-perfect feature of this Gothic- and Moorish-inspired landmark. Inside, a magnificent organ built in Paris by one of the greatest organ builders of the 19th century is a focal point. Touches of other cultures can be found in this great and ornate house of worship, including colorful Stars of David incorporated within each of the 28 stained-glass windows – in thanks for the donation of construction funds from a local Jewish family.
A second key landmark is the Angela Peralta Theater, a true cultural treasure restored to its brilliance from the 1800s. Named for an internationally recognized soprano born in Mazatlan, the theater began as a venue for sophisticated entertainment but fell into disrepair in the 1920s. It was revitalized in 1992 as a historic monument, and today people from around the world enjoy its true glory. Inside, you'll find a museum exhibiting artifacts detailing the theater's history.
Once back at the pier, hop on a bus or van and head north along the incredible coastline along oceanfront boulevards to decadently modern Zona Dorado, or Golden Zone. Here you are free to browse for souvenirs, jewelry and handicrafts amid palm-lined beaches and luxury resorts. Don't forget to gaze down the Malecón, a 13-mile waterfront walkway, one of the longest of its kind in the world, a great spot for people-watching.
Conclude your tour with a short ride back to port ending this adventure with a bag brimming with souvenirs to stir wonderful memories.
