Scenic beauty and tropical delights abound on this culturally rich half-day tour of two of the area's most treasured plantation homes. Board a comfortable transportation for a scenic 30-minute inland drive, en route to the town of Le Lamentin, one of the largest on the island.
Your first destination is L'Habitation Belfort, a charming banana plantation, to learn more about one of the island's most important industries. So fertile is Martinique's soil that it can sustain almost any fruit. Bananas are one of the island's most significant crops, and a visit to Belfort, established more than 30 years ago, gives a unique perspective on the island's agricultural development. Upon arrival, board an open tram and tour the plantation – learning how this sunny yellow fruit goes from the field to the grocery store. Follow the process from irrigation and harvest and see the quarters where the farmhands live. At the end of the tour, explore the pretty grounds and gardens and sample some of the delicious local produce.

Re-board the transportation and continue on to the Clement Plantation House. Situated on the east coast of Martinique amid fragrant sugar cane fields, Clement is one of the most famous plantation homes in the Caribbean. This spectacular cultural heritage site and garden displays a breathtaking selection of local flora and is also home to a world-famous distillery. Be sure to bring your camera, as the exquisite furnishings and architecture hearken back to the colonial age and the botanical gardens are extraordinary. The 16-acre grounds include tranquil ponds, tropical orchards and over 300 species of botanicals.
In addition to the grounds, be sure to take in the photograph gallery – an eclectic mix of portraits of artists, musicians and politicians (Presidents Mitterrand and Bush met here in 1991!) who have been guests at the house over the years.

Then, stroll along shaded walkways to the plantation's antique rum distillery. Since 1887, Clement Rum has been one of the most recognized rums in the world. A guide will lead you on a tour of the old distillery, which crafts the sugar-based delight using traditional techniques and machinery. Explore the vast indoor space highlighting the world of rum through exhibits and heritage displays. Learn the history of the distillery, and sample rum and sugar cane juice. In addition to the tasting, you may purchase some premium rum in the distillery store so that you can create the local island drink, 'Ti punch, at home. It's a powerful mixture of five parts white rum to one part sugar cane syrup; it really does pack a "punch"!
At the conclusion of your day, settle back and enjoy a relaxing ride back to the ship through lush landscapes with a camera filled with pictures and the taste of sweet rum still on your lips.
