WHAT YOU VISIT
Notre Dame de la Garde Cathedral
Set atop Marseille's highest point, 154 meters (505 feet), it offers wonderful views of Marseilles and the Mediterranean. Built upon a 12th century chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary and later, a 16th-century fort, the cathedral has always been a place of pilgrimage for sailors and fishermen since its consecration in 1897.

Fort Saint-Jean
Overlooking the Old Port of Marseilles (Vieux-Port), the fortress was erected by Louis XIV in 1660 on the site of a 13th century military complex built by the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem and served as a departure point for troops heading for the Holy Land. Here, you'll have time to wander along the fort's ramparts, vaulted passageways and barracks and admire the spectacular views.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
The exterior of Notre Dame de la Garde Cathedral boasts a striped exterior of red and white stone and ornate domes reminiscent of Byzantine churches. Inside, you'll find beautiful mosaics from the floor to the ceiling depicting intricate and geometric designs, Christian symbols and flora and fauna. Suspended from the vaulted ceilings are meticulously crafted mobiles of ships.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Follow your guide on a walking tour of the historic quarter known locally as Le Panier. Stroll along the old pedestrian streets and see ancient buildings such as Town Hall, dating back to 1673 with views of the golden statue of Madonna and Child atop Notre Dame de la Garde Cathedral accompanying you along the way.
