Built upon a 12th century chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary and later, a 16th-century fort, the cathedral has always been a place of pilgrimage for sailors and fishermen since its consecration in 1897.
Fort Saint-Jean
Overlooking the Old Port of Marseilles (Vieux-Port), the fortress was erected by Louis XIV in 1660 on the site of a 13th century military complex built by the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem and served as a departure point for troops heading for the Holy Land. Here, you'll have time to explore the fortification's accessible parts and admire the spectacular views. r
