Palma, Mallorca's capital city, hosts a population of 428,000 and a sizeable port. It is also home to a rich mixture of historic buildings, towering churches and fascinating museums, plus a vibrant contemporary art scene, inviting tapas bars, and enchanting squares where revelers congregate to watch the world go by. The central area is comprised of narrow streets nestled between the high walls of residences and businesses that have brought Palma's medieval heritage into the modern day.

Meet your guide at the pier and cycle along as you gaze out at one intriguing site after another. There are so many to absorb but the expert narration of your insightful guide will bring it all to life. Turning onto Carrer de Pare Nadal and into the Placa de Sant Francesc, you'll see the outstanding patio of Can Moragues, dating from the 18th century, the entry to the Cloister of the Convent of Sant Francesc with its Gothic structure and baroque facade. Watch for the statue of Mallorcan missionary Fray Junípero Serra, founder of California's missions, by the church's doorway. Another luminary remembered at the church is Raymond Llull (1232-1315) writer, mystic, missionary and martyr.

'Le Seu', also referred to as the Cathedral of Palma, is a Roman Catholic cathedral that is monumental in its scale. Within its soaring walls, 18,000 people can worship making it the ideal spot for the coronations of Mallorcan and Spanish kings as well as their final resting places. Built on the site of an Arab mosque, the cathedral was raised in the French-Gothic style and was finished in 1601.

Situated on a hill above the fountained waters of the Bay of Palma, the gold limestone structure is the city's crowning glory. While your tour does not take you inside the cathedral, your guide will surely recount some of its many wonders, like the heavily decorated vaults bearing stone columns. The astonishing 'Crown of Thorns' chandelier designed by modern-day architect, Antoni Gaudi, hangs over the altar and the window that seems to float high above the Royal Chapel is the biggest church window ever made. And the Bell Tower of the cathedral holds nine bells, including a very famous one: 'N'Eloi', which weighs of over five-and-half-tons!

Graceful arches lead into the Placa Major. Built at the beginning of the 19th century on the site of the Inquisition building, it was renovated in 1951. On Monday, Friday and Saturday mornings, it is the site of a bustling crafts market. The square includes an early 20th-century building, the Headquarters of the March Foundation, which is a cultural center and art gallery, the Church of Sant Miguel, and the Church and Cloister of Sant Antoniet. With this kaleidoscope of colorful sights and sounds creating images destined to be remembered, your tour wind its way back to the cruise dock and your waiting ship.
