While you are in port in Palma de Mallorca, head out to Valldemosa for a half-day excursion filled with enchantment. Your scenic drive along the sparkling coast and through the stunning Serra de Tramuntana Mountains. Like Polish author, Frederic Chopin and French writer, George Sand, just to name a few of the glitterati that have fallen in love with the region's near miraculous beauty. Then completely immerse yourself in the traditional Mallorcan lifestyle at the gorgeous 17th century La Granja mansion.
Stretch your legs as you follow your guide on a walking tour of the charming village and learn about the venerated saint of the island, Catalina Thomas who lived here between 1531 and 1574. Undoubtedly, you'll also hear tales of the romantic trysts shared by Chopin and Sand at the La Cartuja Monastery, where Chopin spent a winter. Visit the prior's cell, plus the old chemist and church and linger at dramatic viewpoints where the lovers may have shared a quiet moment or two back in 1839.
Across from the Santa Maria de Valldemossa parish church, heading northwest on El Pujol Hill, James II built a castle as his hunting residence in 1309. Two years later, his son Prince Sancho, the heir to the throne, expanded the palace and installed running water. The construction and expansion were commissioned to master builder Guillem Cerdà, a bricklayer and mayor of the town. The kings were so pleased with their new residence that they rewarded Cerdà and his descendants with lands free of taxes and tithes. You'll have time on your own to wander the narrow, cobbled streets and to shop for souvenirs along the way. Then, you'll re-board your bus and continue your tour to Son Marroig.
His home creates a museum of his life. In the gardens, you'll find a graceful white Carrara-marble rotunda imported from Italy. Sit here and gaze out over the Na Foradada ('pierced rock') peninsula – one of Mallorca's most beautiful landmarks. And though you may, like Archduke Ludwig, never want to leave, your tour continues with the scenic ride back to Palma and your waiting ship.Set within the treasured lands of Archduke Ludwig Salvador of Austria, the house at Son Marroig is a shrine to the memory of an avid protector of Mallorca's flora, fauna and cultural heritage. Born in 1847 in the Pitti Palace in Florence, the son of Leopold III of Tuscany and Marie Antoinette de Bourbon, Ludwig came to Mallorca at age 20 to escape court life and immediately fell in love with the island.
A fundamental character in the cultural and patronage history of the last years of the 19th century and the first years of the last century, the House Museum of Son Marroig offers a visit to this former property of the Archduke. Its large museum room is dedicated to him, where you can find: drawings, books and his personal effects. Its main objective is to make all visitors aware of the work carried out by this creator of the best written work on our islands: the "Die Balearen", his love for nature and his commitment to respecting our history.
Canvases by Joaquín Mir, Antonio Ribas Oliver, Antonio Ribas Prats, Bauzá, Erwin Hubert, Pizá, etc. hang on its walls. In its showcases we can find ancient necklaces and Phoenician objects as well as Greek and Roman ceramics. An alabaster Virgin from the 13th century, Roman amphorae, old Majorcan furniture, Greek statuettes and Majorcan fabrics make up the great museum room.
The visit to the house is completed with a tour of its gardens, where the Archduke left his mark: with its immense cistern, the "Des Galliner" viewpoint, the Carrara marble Ionic temple with the imposing mass of La Foradada at its feet. , from where one of the best views of the Majorcan North Coast is contemplated.
At the end of your tour, make the return trip to Palma and your waiting ship.
