Acquaint yourself with the historical legacy of Granada on a full day tour that encompasses two of the city's architectural masterpieces: the majestic Granada Cathedral and the adjoining Royal Chamber. Wear comfortable walking shoes and don't forget to bring a camera to capture each memorable detail of your exciting visit.

After boarding your motorcoach, you'll weave your way through Malaga's city streets, past whitewashed villages for the approximately two-hour scenic drive to Granada. Sit back and enjoy the views of the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains as you approach this ancient city. Founded by the Phoenicians around 1000 B.C., conquered by the Romans about 800 years later only to be ousted by the Visigoths in the 5th century, Granada's most significant period occurred during the 8th century, when the Moors surged out of North Africa and occupied the Iberian Peninsula. During this time, Islamic art and architecture flourished throughout Spain. Moorish rule began to crumble in 1469 when two of the most powerful Spanish kingdoms united when Queen Isabella of Castile married King Ferdinand of Aragon. Their combined forces led to the Reconquest of Spain forcing the Moors' surrender in 1492. After establishing Granada as the center of their new kingdom, one of the first edicts the new monarchs demanded was the construction of a cathedral so grand that it would one day hold their tombs. However, construction wouldn't begin until decades after their deaths and it would take 180 years before it would ever see completion.

Once you reach the city, you'll head to the Old Quarter, the city's main religious and commercial center since the 14th century. Here, you'll disembark near one of the city's fabled landmarks - the Granada Cathedral. Tucked tightly amid rows of buildings, the cathedral's formidable exterior is just a hint as to the grandeur you'll discover once you step inside. The cathedral's first stone was laid in 1523 on the site of what had been Granada's main mosque and reflects the changing architectural styles that swept through Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries. The foundation and massive granite columns that grace the entrance were built in a Gothic style, while the main façade is Baroque. The stunning Renaissance interior features a beautiful gold and white finish and boasts a grand altar, which features four painted wooden panels depicting the conquest of Granada and two praying statues of Isabella and Ferdinand. But the most dramatic feature may be the 147-foot high dome that bathes the cathedral in a surreal light.

Then, you're off to enjoy a delicious lunch but you'll return later to further explore the Royal Chamber. Built in 1504, this impressive building houses a wealth of Baroque sculptures, tapestries, portraits, relics and the marble tombs of the Isabella and Ferdinand.

At the completion of your day, enjoy a pleasant ride back to Malaga where you'll board your ship.
