A motorcoach drive brings you to a centrally located drop-off spot in the capital city of Kyoto, which served as the emperor's residence from 794 until 1868. Today, Kyoto is the seventh-largest city in Japan with a population of well over a million people and a modern flair.
Filled with treasures, Kyoto offers something for everyone, but some venues are considered must-see attractions.
Nijo Castle anchors the center of Kyoto. Constructed in 1603, it was built by the first shogun of united Japan and was designed to be a showpiece of aesthetics more suited for visitors than for combat. Although the architecture is the star attraction, the pond gardens are worth a look.
Step into another world when you visit the magnificent Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion Temple), one of the finest examples of a traditional Japanese garden.
Explore Kiyomizu Temple, an independent Buddhist temple and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which affords sweeping views of Kyoto from its lofty terrace.
For a change of scenery, visit Gion, Kyoto's most famous geisha district, filled with shops, restaurants and traditional teahouses. Around every corner and down each historic street, you'll encounter many of the quintessential images of Japan.
These are just a few suggestions - the city is yours to discover, but no matter how you wish to explore Kyoto, you're sure to enjoy lively discussion with your fellow travelers on your comfortable motorcoach ride back to port.
