This tour gives you the opportunity to view some of the spectacular scenery for which Madeira is renowned. Leaving Funchal, the tour heads out towards the east and stops at Pináculo for excellent views over the town and bay of Funchal. Then off to Ponta do Garajau which is famous for the statue of Christ the Redeemer that stands there, looking out at sea with outstretched arms as well as its views over Funchal and the Natural Park of Garajau. From Ponta do Garajau, the tour heads north to Pico de Arieiro. On a clear day there are magnificent views over the north, south and center of the island.
You will then have lunch at Poiso, where you will receive a warm welcome at a local restaurant. The menu is made of traditional Madeira cuisine, accompanied by red or white wine, rounded off with a glass of Madeira and coffee, and a local folklore group to entertain you while you dine.
After lunch, your tour proceeds to the village of Monte, notable for many fine properties and gardens established in or near the village. Perched on a hill above Funchal, Monte's twin-towered, 18th-century church is city's landmark. In the center of the high altar stands the statue of Our Lady of Monte (circa 15 century), credited for being the source of many miracles. Inside the church you will also find the tomb of Charles I, the last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire who died in Madeira in exile in 1922.
Enjoy a toboggan ride down the hill in wicker sledges, once an established form of transport. Then when you return to Funchal, the tour will proceed to a wine lodge, where you are invited to taste some fine Madeira wine, world famous for over 400 years.
