WHAT YOU VISIT
Monte
Once known as a health resort for Europe's high society, Monte is known for its lovely architecture and Lady of Monte Church. Outside, the church boasts a twin-towered facade and the large churchyard offers a splendid view over Funchal. An inside visit reveals elegant chandeliers, a 15th century statue of Our Lady of Monte, beautiful pieces of gold and silverwork crafted in the 17th and 18th centuries and the tomb of Charles I of Habsburg, the last emperor of Austria, who went into exile in Madeira in 1921.
'Snowless' Sleigh Ride
One of the best and unique ways to return to Funchal is to ride the 'carros de cesto,' a wicker basket chair set on runners. Hop in and two 'carreiros' (men dressed in white with straw hats) will push the toboggan-like basket down the hill to the Funchal suburb of Livramento.
Madeira Botanical Gardens
Set out over a sprawling nine acres, the garden is home to five distinct areas that exhibit 2,500 exotic and rare plants.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Everywhere you point your camera you'll discover one memorable photo after another.
