WHAT YOU VISIT

Funchal Old Town
The Old Town of Funchal was the first Portuguese neighborhood outside the European Continent. Right away, a community of fishermen and seafarers was created. The Old Town of Funchal got to the beginning of the 21st Century as the area to avoid. Thanks to people with knowledge of other Old Towns in Europe and with a great vision, Zona Velha do Funchal has gained a new face, a new dynamic and today, it is a mandatory place to visit, not only for visitors, but also for locals.

Monte
Once known as a health resort for Europe's high society, Monte is known for its lovely architecture and Lady of Monte Church. Outside, the church boasts a twin-towered facade and the large churchyard offers a splendid view over Funchal. An inside visit reveals elegant chandeliers, a 15th century statue of Our Lady of Monte, beautiful pieces of gold and silverwork crafted in the 17th and 18th centuries and the tomb of Charles I of Habsburg, the last emperor of Austria, who went into exile in Madeira in 1921.

Oliveira Wine Lodge
Sitting in the heart of the city, the winery boasts some of the island's finest madeira wines. Learn about the different types of Madeira wines, and how to sip and savor this elixir synonymous with the island. Two samplings plus a chance to purchase some wines are a highlight of your visit.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
As you return from the Oliveira Wine Lodge, you'll stop for photos at the Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint. Perched over 1,160 feet above sea level, the overlook offers panoramic views over Funchal, Funchal Bay and the Desertas Islands.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
As your cable car climbs its way up to Monte, you can't help but notice the breathtaking views of the mountain, lush greenery, Funchal Bay and the city.
