WHAT YOU VISIT
Monterosso
The largest and most famous of the five villages of the Cinque Terre, Monterosso is divided into two distinct parts: New Town is famed for its promenade that runs along the sea while Old Town sits on San Cristoforo Hill with narrow alleys lined with brightly colored multi-story houses. Here, you will find a medieval castle, the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Piazza Garibaldi, and Town Hall.
Vernazza
Officially recognized as 'one of the most beautiful towns of Italy,' Vernazza is a traffic free village whose castle is the oldest surviving fortification in the Cinque Terre.
Portovenere
Located on the 'Gulf of Poets,' named for writers like Mary and Percy Shelley and Lord Byron who frequented this idyllic village, Portovenere boasts a medieval enclave of narrow streets edged by tall, colorful houses. The 12th-century St. Peter's Church, perched on a promontory overlooking the sparkling sea, offers spectacular views and the Doria Castle is an outstanding example of the Genoese military architecture.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
From the Church of San Giovanni Battista with its ornate green and white marble façade in Monterosso to the picture-perfect piazza in Vernazza to the fortified walls of Portovenere, your camera will be working overtime!
LUNCH
While visiting Monterosso, you can treat yourself to lunch. And since one of the joys of foreign travel is tasting a new dish, why not try 'cacciucco,' a local favorite that's made with fish mixed with herbs and tomatoes, and spooned over garlic toast.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Cinque Terre National Park, nestled in the Italian Riviera, is the smallest and oldest National Park in Italy and translates to 'Five Lands.' Acclaimed by UNESCO as 'a cultural landscape of great scenic and cultural value,' these small towns, which cling to the Ligurian cliffs, are studded with candy-hued buildings, old castles on the horizon and centuries-old churches, which have been built into the surrounding, uneven terrain.
