The Mediterranean isle of Cyprus has a curiously divided personality. Located 174 miles east of Greece and 47 miles south of Turkey, Cyprus has long been shaped by both of these ancient cultures. And nowhere are these influences seen more clearly than in Cyprus's delicious cuisine.
Board your comfortable motorcoach for a scenic drive to the village of Tochni. In this half-day excursion, you will be treated to a traditional taverna for lunch, accompanied by wine and folk music, followed by some free time to discover the city of Limassol.
Mezze is a selection of small plates of food; the word is derived from the Turkish meze ("taste" or "flavor") or the similar Greek word mezés. The dishes may be hot or cold, sweet or savory - but they are certainly delicious! Cypriot cuisine is similar to Greek, featuring olives, fresh vegetables, hummus, fresh bread, and seafood. Halloumi cheese, which originated here over a thousand years ago, is the national cheese of Cyprus. Traditionally made with a mixture of goat and sheep milk, it has a firm texture, similar to mozzarella, and can be served raw, fried or grilled. Kebabs, lamb, sausages and chicken are also found in Cypriot cuisine. Local wines will be served alongside the meal to complete the perfectly authentic experience!
Like the country's cuisine, the music of Cyprus also reflects the cultures of its immediate neighbors. A performance of traditional folk music will accompany the meal, which has many elements in common with Greek, Turkish and Arabic music. Some instruments you might hear include the bouzouki, oud, violin, lute, accordion and Cyprus flute.
Following your meal, you will have a chance to stroll through the streets of Limassol, Cyprus's second largest city, which is centered around a medieval castle built by the Byzantines around 1000 A.D. that now serves as a museum. The Public Garden is another notable landmark, where you will find a variety of the local plant life and a small zoo.
You will eventually return to the ship, full of the food and culture of this unique island.
