What you will visit:
Archbishopric Palace Square
This charming square houses the Archbishop's Palace, one of the most beautiful in Cyprus. It was built by Archbishop Makarios III in the 1950s, a two-story building in the graceful Venetian style with high arches, large windows and elegant moldings. Look for a bronze statue in his honor in the front. During the military conflict in 1974, the palace was damaged but was restored in the 1980s.
Saint John's Cathedral
Also found within the old city walls of Nicosia in Archbishopric Palace Square, Saint John's Cathedral (Agios Ioannis Cathedral) is an elegant structure built on the site of a 14th century chapel. It was rebuilt by Archbishop Nikiforos from its foundations in 1662. Its modest exterior doesn't reveal the treasures inside-beautiful gilded woodwork, sparkling chandeliers, impressive wooden iconostasi and detailed frescos from the 18th century.
Laiki Geitonia
This charming pedestrian neighborhood in the old town of Nicosia is filled with winding streets, traditional Cypriot architecture, and lovingly restored buildings dating back to the 18th century. Today, those buildings house curio shops, restaurants, taverns and galleries. Stroll to Eleftheria Square, adjacent to the centuries-old Venetian walls and the dry moat that encircles the city. It is a revitalized public gathering space designed by the Zaha Hadid architectural firm, which artfully integrates both the traditions and modernization of Nicosia.
The Leventis Municipal Museum
The history of Nicosia, from antiquity to the present era, comes alive in this fascinating museum housed in a lovingly restored, 1880s, neoclassical building. Peruse a curated collection of costumes, maps, engravings, archaeological artifacts, photographs, jewels, furniture and other objects that tell the tale of the life of Cypriots. The temporary exhibition space hosts displays from other museums and foundations from Cyprus and abroad.
Cross Point (Green Line)
A stop at the checkpoint leading to the north section of Nicosia, under the control of Turkey, is an opportunity to experience the history of the nation, divided following the 1974 war.
Lunch:
After seeing so many sights, it's a pleasure to sit down for a lunch served in an old town restaurant. Sample menu includes traditional Cypriot/Greek meze consisting of salads with cold dips, warm appetizers and local dishes. A bottle of local wine for four adults or a beer, soft drink and bottled water accompanies the meal.
Shopping:
Take a few moments of your free time to explore the myriad small souvenir boutiques and galleries while walking in Laiki Yitonia. Additionally, the Leventis Municipal Museum has a gift shop.
