The largest mountain range in Cyprus is the Troodos range, which stretches across western Cyprus. Created from the collision of the European and African tectonic plates, a process that initially formed the island of Cyprus, the Troodos Mountains' highest point is Mount Olympus, at over 6,404 feet - high enough to support a winter ski resort on this Mediterranean island!
Board your comfortable motorcoach for this half-day, nature-lovers' tour that travels into the Troodos Mountains. Embark on a 2.5-hour guided hike along a pristine stream, ending at the stunning Kaledonia Falls, which cascade down the rock face with a show of power and grace.
Bring your camera and your walking shoes, as you will be fording streams and stepping over rocks. This untouched region is dotted with tiny, picturesque villages. You will hear the birds twittering, breathe the crisp mountain air, and take in the spectacular views that will surround you as you follow the trail, listening to your guide tell you about the area and the local flora and fauna. You will see carob, cypress and olive groves, as well as nut and apple orchards along the way.
The Kaledonia Waterfalls were named by the Scots who visited the area around 1878. The scenic beauty surrounding the falls reminded them of their homeland, hence the name, as "Caledonia" was Scotland in ancient times. The Kaledonia Waterfalls are one of the highest in Cyprus, falling from a height of 50 feet. The waterfall is the gorgeous finale to nature's enjoyable show.
End your hike at the mountain resort of Platres, where you can sit on the terrace of a local hotel for some refreshments and snacks before returning to port along a scenic route.
