Grab your camera and hang on tight for this scenic and exciting four-wheel drive tour of some of Cyprus's most beautiful mountain villages!

Your inland "safari" begins with a drive into the Troodos Mountain Range, the largest in Cyprus, which stretches across the western section of the country. The range arose from the collision of the European and African tectonic plates, and its highest point is Mount Olympus, at over 6,404 feet – high enough to support a winter ski resort on this Mediterranean island! Your 4WD Jeep will also go off-road onto dirt trails to give you the best views of the region, which is dotted with tiny picturesque villages. Breathe the crisp mountain air, and take in the spectacular scenery that will surround you on all sides.

You'll pause by the beautiful Mesa Potamos Falls to see the pristine mountain waters cascading over the rocks, close to the ancient St. Prodromos Monastery, then continue on for refreshments and snacks in Platres, a charming summer resort town. A very old village, Platres was originally home to just shepherds and vine growers, but it has become a popular destination for vacationers to come enjoy a cool retreat away from the coast. Today, charming hotels and shady walking trails sprinkle the mountainside, with views of the surrounding pear, cherry, apple and peach orchards fed by the perennial stream that runs through Platres.

Your next stop is the village of Omodos, where picturesque cobblestone streets wind around a central plaza. There may be no village more beautifully representative of the culture and history of Cyprus than Omodos. Tucked into the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, Omodos was built around the ancient Monastery of the Holy Cross, which contains many religious artifacts, including a section of the rope that supposedly bound Jesus to the cross. Omodos is also at the center of the country's winemaking region, and you'll have a chance to stop at the Linos Winery, where you can taste some of the excellent local varietals.

You will have time to explore and shop for souvenirs and locally made leather goods in Omodos. Friendly villagers are always happy to point you in the right direction and give you some tidbits of local lore!

Hop back into your Jeep for the ride back to port – and snap some spectacular last shots of the mountainside orchards and vineyards as you descend down the hillside.
