The vineyards of Lanzarote, with its little-known grapes, dramatic volcanic soil and high elevation, produce some of the continent's most distinct and delightful artisan wines. Visit several of the region's top wineries, tour its distinctive vineyards and learn more about wine production on this lovely and scenic half-day tour.

Begin the day when you board your comfortable motorcoach and head to the southern part of Lanzarote, known as the Mythic Island for its breathtaking lunar-like landscapes. Gazing out the window, watch the unusual landscapes go by; volcanic and rocky, they have an other-worldly beauty. Stop at the Monumento al Campesino, the Peasant Monument, created by César Manrique to commemorate the hard work of the peasant community of Lanzarote.

Your first destination is Bodega Rubicon. Bodegas Rubicón is a centuries-old estate. To understand its history, one has to go back to 1570. The modern history of Bodegas Rubicón starts in 1979 when Don Germán López Figueras, a wine-lover, acquires the country house of La Geria from the Fajardo family. The country house, built in the 17th century, included a noble home, service quarters, the winery, which covered most of the constructed area, and a land of vineyards stretching on three hectares. Don Germán acquired the property mainly for the winery as he wanted to devote himself to his great passion: wine making

For decades, the winery used the equipment of the old winery to make wine in a home-made way: wooden traditional presses of the early 20th century, ancient stone presses dug in the ground, and cement tanks to store the wine. As years passed, more hectares of vineyard were acquired; the old winery was restored and extended to where, today, the Rubicón wine is produced. Set in La Geria and surrounded by centenarian eucalyptuses, the winery stands solemnly overlooking the National Park of Timanfaya. Bodegas Rubicon is a member of the Denomination of Origin Wines from Lanzarote.

Continue on to La Geria, an agricultural area so unusual it has been designated 'land art' and a protected natural landscape. Volcanic eruptions in the 1730s covered the land and made it unusable for crops. But farmers have created a way to use the land by implementing small cone-shaped divots that store water for later use a way to sidestep the area's low rainfall.
Wind your way down narrow roads bordered by the dramatic black terrain of the lava fields dotted delightfully by verdant vineyards. The grapes grown in this area will become Malvasia wine, which is most suited to the environment and climate.
Travel to a local cellar where you will have the opportunity to taste the wine that comes from grapes grown on this system of irrigation. Grapes today are still picked by hand, as it is impossible for machinery to get through this crater-filled sand. There are several wineries in this region, all situated in a romantic setting.

From there you will drive back to Arrecife and to the ship.
