WHAT YOU VISIT
Bangkok
The very name conjures visions of revered temples, dazzling Buddhas and a treasured history. This full-day tour doesn't disappoint.
Wat Trimitr Temple
One of Bangkok's most famous temples houses the massive Golden Buddha. Crafted in over 5,500 kilograms (six tons) of solid gold, the statue stands three meters tall (over nine feet), making it the largest solid gold Buddha image in the world.
The Grand Palace
Perched on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, this amazing 18th century royal complex was once home to the King of Thailand and his family, and even today, its opulence is truly regal. The palace's major buildings, although designed in the European style, are crowned with glittering spires richly decorated with gilt and colored-glass mosaics. The complex consists of not only royal and throne halls, but the renowned Wat Phra Kaeo, also known as the Royal Chapel of the Emerald Buddha. This is one of Buddhism's most magnificent monasteries and one of Thailand's most celebrated sites. At the heart of the monastery is a Buddha carved from a single piece of emerald-green jasper, perched atop a gilded pedestal.
Chao Phraya River Cruise
Bangkok has long been hailed as the "Venice of the East." Set off on a float down the canals of the city's Thonburi district and possibly cruise past Wat Arun, known as the Temple of the Dawn, which once served as the Royal Chapel. The riverboat could also take in Phra Prang, a 79-meter high (260-foot) pagoda decorated with ceramic tiles and fragments of multi-colored porcelain.
