WHAT YOU VISIT
Hiking Tajogaite, the Newest La Palma Volcano
Rising 1,120 meters (3,670 feet) above sea level, Tajogaite erupted in 2021. Lava spewed and flowed from September to December and destroyed nearly 3,000 buildings and enveloped the towns of Todoque and El Paraiso. Learn its history and geology during a guided hike to viewpoints near the volcano's craggy crater. First, gain insight into its formation with a stop at the Caldera de Taburiente Visitor's Center. Then, you'll travel to the Llano de El Jable trailhead and begin the five-kilometer (three-mile) hike up to Tajogaite. As you edge closer to the crater, you'll witness lava flows and black volcanic ash as the smell of sulfur fills the air. For another perspective, you'll travel to Mirador de Tajuya viewpoint for awe-inspiring views.
