Charming Lugo, located on a smooth promontory overlooking the Mino River, is one of Galicia's four provinces, an unspoiled atmosphere with a walled capital city and a smattering of villages all set against a backdrop of spectacular natural scenery. Boasting architecture from the Celtic era to the Romans and from neoclassical design to the Gothic period, this historic area merits a full day of exploration.
A scenic one-hour motorcoach drive becomes a panoramic tour when you reach Lugo's well-preserved Roman wall, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built along the perimeter of the original settlement, this is the city's most significant monument and testament to its past. The wall spans approximately 1.5 miles and at the highest section reaches 35 feet. The five original Roman gates are visible as you circle the masonry wall, and 82 of the original 85 curved many turrets remain. You will also see two additional towers, making this a rather impenetrable barrier to foreign attackers.
After seeing the city from afar, it's time for up-close views. Together with your knowledgeable guide, you will enjoy a walking route atop the astonishing Roman Wall, then descend the steps into the city and stroll through the old town for picture-perfect views of its charming squares, cheerful gardens and a host of historic highlights.
Your route takes you past the beautiful Town Hall located at the most important square in town, "Plaza Mayor", and through the cozy narrow streets of the old town towards Lugo's beautiful cathedral, where the Holy Eucharist can be contemplated day and night. Dating back to 1129 A.D., the church has varied architecture, an unusual blend of forms and styles covering the Romanesque, baroque, Gothic and neoclassical periods. Afterwards, join your guide for an optional visit to the interesting Provincial Museum, housed in the medieval "Convento de San Francisco," which displays an extensive collection of folk history, paintings, pottery and coins, or maybe explore the Porta Miná Museum with galleries of archaeological remains at your own pace.
From here, begin your independent exploration. You may wish to spend time in depth at one of the points of interest you saw during your walk, or perhaps you are ready to lunch on your own at one of the lively tapas bars. Lugo's Old Town is easy to navigate, and the food is excellent. Seafood products shine as do the rabbit and pheasant, and the local wines are the most popular to drink when traveling the region.
At the designated time, return to the motorcoach and relax and chat with fellow travelers about all you saw on this fascinating day as you return to La Coruna and the ship.
