Board your motorcoach and travel through Kristiansand, viewing the Quadraturen, the old historic town center laid out in a grid of right angles. The streets here are lined with 18th and 19th century wood frame houses. Drive out of Kristiansand and head north to Hornnes and Setesdal Mineral Park, traveling through a landscape of forest, hill, lakes and small farms.
The Setesdal Mineral Park is located on a peninsula of the Otra River. This region has been an important mining district in Norway for over a century. It once boasted the largest nickel mine in Europe and is still an important source of feldspar. Abandoned mines and quarries dot the surrounding landscape.
The centerpiece of the Mineral Park is its unique museum, five exhibit halls housed inside the refurbished tunnels of a mine. The exhibits range from local minerals to feldspar and nickel, one the area's sources of wealth. The displays include typical mining equipment such as sledges, ore carts and smithy tools. Other displays include minerals from around the world as well as rare and precious minerals. Water from the river outside is used to both heat the tunnels and maintain a constant humidity in them, preserving some of the more delicate ore samples.
Enjoy free time to explore on your own. There is a coffee shop, bookstore and a boutique selling minerals and souvenirs. After your visit board your motorcoach for the return trip to Kristiansand.
