From the mountains to the sea, take in Mother Nature's splendor, when you tour three of Kona's most picturesque sights. From the cloud forest high above Kona to the Kaloko Honokohau National Historical Park, lace up your walking shoes and embark on a four-hour tour that's a nature lovers delight.
Your adventure begins when you board an air-conditioned motorcoach for a scenic drive to the slopes of Hualalai Volcano for a rare opportunity to visit the tropical Cloud Forest Sanctuary.
Located 3,000 feet above sea level, this educational facility and sanctuary is dedicated to the preservation of this spectacular rainforest habitat. Dense, lush forests and magical botanical gardens cling to the slopes of the sleeping volcano. A ranger guide meets you and will escort you through the 70-acre Cloud Forest Sanctuary. You'll want to have your camera at the ready from the moment you begin your walk under a canopy of 30-foot-tall tree ferns, ohia trees and bamboo. You'll travel approximately a mile and a half of natural paths ascending and descending through a cool, shady cloud forest. The scenery is truly breathtaking as you find yourself immersed in an enchanted forest among towering palm trees, delicate ferns, bright flower blossoms and the sounds and scents of these beautiful natural surroundings. Feel the cool air against your face, listen to the birds singing their sweet songs and marvel at the thousands of colors in the forest. Your guide will tell you about the wide range of botanical specimens, the volcano's geology and the people of Hawaii.
From here, a short ride brings you to Kaloko Honokohau National Historical Park, a picturesque coastal park dedicated to the heritage of early Hawaiian settlements that survived in the rugged Kona. Your guide will lead you on a short hike to the ancient "heiau," or sacred temples. You'll also marvel at the petroglyphs carved by the native Hawaiians who once lived here.
A stroll along the sandy shoreline reveals how ancient Hawaiians stored their stocks of fish in traps and ponds, and as you gaze out over the waters you might see a "honu," green sea turtles or a rare Hawaiian monk seal. Further out, dolphins and whales are sometimes spotted frolicking in the deeper waters.
Settle back and relax on the ride back to the pier, reviewing your photos and chatting with fellow travelers about this beautiful day.
